India has made history once again at the 95th Academy Awards by winning the Documentary Short Subject category for the first time. The winning documentary is titled “The Elephant Whisperers”, produced by Guneet Monga and Achin Jain of Sikhya Entertainment. This is not the first time that Guneet Monga has brought an Oscar to India, as her previous documentary “Period. End of Sentence” won the same award in 2019.

The plot of “The Elephant Whisperers” centers around a family who adopts two orphan baby elephants in Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. The documentary portrays the unbreakable bond between the elephants and their caretakers, Bomman and Bellie. Directed by Kartiki Gonsalves, the Netflix documentary beat out other nominees such as “Haulout”, “How Do You Measure a Year?”, “The Martha Mitchell Effect” and “Stranger at the Gate” to win the coveted award.
In an Instagram post, Guneet Monga described the documentary as an emotionally enriching and ‘jumbo sized’ tale which showcases unconditional love.
The film’s director, Kartiki Gonsalves, used her acceptance speech to highlight the sacred bond between humans and the natural world, as well as the need for empathy towards other living beings and respect for indigenous communities.
“The Elephant Whisperers” depicts the amazing work of caregivers who selflessly tend to the needs of those who cannot tend to themselves. The documentary showcases the strong bond between indigenous communities and the environment and creatures with whom they share it.
Bomman and Bellie became a part of Raghu’s life, dropping everything to nurture and heal one orphaned elephant. They became a family through their unity and perseverance, which ultimately led to Raghu’s healing.
Through this extraordinary story, the film hopes to inspire viewers to discover new ways of finding love within themselves, their communities, and the creatures that co-exist. It also aims to pave the way for more Raghus to find a chosen family and brave through adversities.
